FAQs › Can I Eat Before Acupuncture? What About After?
Yes — eating a light meal 1–2 hours before acupuncture is recommended. Avoid acupuncture on an empty stomach (risk of lightheadedness) or immediately after a heavy meal. After treatment, drink water and avoid strenuous activity for a few hours.
The ideal state for acupuncture is neither hungry nor overfull. A light meal — a piece of fruit, some crackers, or a small bowl of rice — 1–2 hours before treatment provides enough blood sugar to prevent lightheadedness without the discomfort of treating with a full stomach.
Coffee and caffeine are fine in moderation before treatment, but excessive caffeine can make some patients more restless during the needle retention phase. Alcohol should be avoided on the day of treatment — it interferes with blood flow regulation and can cause unexpected responses to needling.
After acupuncture, drink a glass of water before leaving the clinic — treatment stimulates circulation and it is good practice to stay hydrated. Some patients feel deeply relaxed and mildly tired after treatment — this is a normal healing response and should be honoured with a gentle afternoon rather than intensive exercise.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after treatment. Some practitioners recommend avoiding cold or raw foods on the evening of treatment, particularly for patients being treated for Cold-pattern or digestive conditions, as warm, cooked foods support the work of the treatment.
