Simple Questions to Ask Before Trying Acupuncture

7:19 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

The most helpful questions before a first acupuncture appointment are often the simplest. Here is a practical list to take with you.

Walking into a new clinic can make your mind go blank, even if you had a dozen questions in the car. Writing a few down before you leave home means you will come away with the answers you were after.

Four plain questions to start with

  • What will the assessment involve today?
  • What might I feel when the needles are in?
  • What other options are there besides acupuncture?
  • What happens if I start to feel faint or unwell?

None of these is too basic. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, would much rather you ask than sit there wondering.

Going a little deeper

Once the basics are covered, you might ask why particular points have been chosen and when the plan will be looked at again. Be sure to mention if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, which medicines you take, and whether you have a pacemaker or another implanted device. It is tempting to decide something is irrelevant and leave it out, but these details can change what is appropriate. A good discussion gives you enough to make an informed choice, while being honest that no procedure is entirely free of risk.

Linking the plan to your own aims

Think about the difference between the symptom you have and the change you would like. Your aim might be finding a regular task less uncomfortable, getting a clearer understanding of what is happening or knowing at what point you should see your GP or a specialist. Ask Christine how progress will be checked and what would make her suggest adjusting course.

Making a time in Freshwater

The Freshwater clinic is a local option for people from Manly, Fairlight, Balgowlah and further along the beaches. Bring your question list, a note of your medicines and, if you have them, copies of recent test results. Nothing written here can replace the individual discussion that happens during your consultation.
