Fertility challenges can be physically and emotionally draining. Acupuncture has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine, and some people choose it to support their wellbeing and help them feel more relaxed while trying to conceive or going through IVF.
Acupuncture has been part of traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, including in the area of reproductive wellbeing. In TCM theory, it is used to encourage the smooth flow of Qi and Blood to the uterus and ovaries, and to bring the body into a more balanced state. These are traditional concepts rather than proven medical mechanisms.
People come to acupuncture at different points on their fertility journey. Some have irregular cycles, some have been diagnosed with conditions such as PCOS, and some have been told their infertility is unexplained. In each case, acupuncture is offered as a complement to medical care, and it is important that diagnosis and treatment are guided by your GP or fertility specialist.
For people undergoing IVF, the process can be demanding, with appointments, medications and a great deal of waiting. Many find acupuncture sessions a calm, quiet space during this time, and some say it helps them feel more relaxed and better able to cope with stress.
Researchers have studied acupuncture around embryo transfer, but the evidence is mixed and research is ongoing. For that reason, we do not suggest it will change the outcome of IVF. We see its role as supportive: helping you feel cared for and more at ease as part of a broader plan led by your medical team.
There is no single right time. Some people choose to begin a few months before trying to conceive or starting an IVF cycle, so they can settle into a routine of regular, relaxing sessions. Others start part-way through treatment. It is a good idea to talk with your fertility specialist about timing and to keep them informed about any complementary therapies you use, including herbal medicine.
If you are looking for a gentle way to look after yourself while trying to conceive, acupuncture is one option some people include in their self-care. Our practitioner, Dr Christine Shen (Acupuncturist), is happy to discuss how sessions can fit around your medical care.
