Recognising a few names on a friend's label is not enough to recreate their formula. Here is how granule prescriptions work and what to ask about your own.
A friend shows you the label on their herbal formula and you recognise several names: ginger, liquorice, perhaps a mushroom or two. It can seem logical to buy the same ingredients and put together your own version. That approach misses how Chinese herbal prescribing actually works.
In traditional Chinese medicine, a formula is considered as a complete combination rather than a set of separate items chosen for their reputations. Granule preparations add another layer: two bottles with similar names or a similar look can differ in composition and in the directions that go with them. A list of ingredients simply does not carry enough information to recreate someone else's prescription.
Herbal medicine from Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is dispensed as granules in labelled bottles. You might ask her:

Traditional texts often list many conditions a formula has been used for. Those descriptions explain a historical way of thinking; they are not proof that a formula will be effective for each condition mentioned. It is also wise not to borrow a prescription written for another person, swap in a bottle that looks alike, or combine products from an ingredient list found online.
You should leave with a clear product name, written directions and a plan for review. Store the sheet with the original bottle, and let Christine know if a doctor alters any of your medicines. Should something new appear and you are unsure whether the granules are involved, call for advice before changing how much you take.

Rainbow Medicine offers Chinese herbal medicine at the Freshwater clinic for people across the Northern Beaches. If that friend's label is still on your mind, take a photo of it; Christine can explain why it belongs to their story rather than yours. Decisions about herbs are made individually, and this article is only a general guide.
