Huangfu Mi and the Classic That Shaped Acupuncture Writing

8:02 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

The third-century scholar Huangfu Mi helped gather earlier acupuncture knowledge into one influential classic. Here is how that history relates to care today.

A scholar who gathered earlier knowledge

Acupuncture's long history was shaped not only by practitioners but also by people who collected, organised and passed on what came before them. Huangfu Mi, a scholar of the third century, is associated with compiling the Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing, often translated as the Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. The text drew together earlier material and became an influential reference for later generations.

Illustrative, Lane Cove: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, holds the wrist of a patient in a magenta top, her needled forearm resting on a towel.

History and modern evidence answer different questions

Knowing that a classical text was important tells us about the development of a tradition. It does not, on its own, provide modern evidence that a particular treatment will help a particular person. Both kinds of knowledge have value, but they serve separate purposes.

Bringing your curiosity to the clinic

If the cultural story of acupuncture fascinates you, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is happy to talk about it at the Lane Cove clinic. Historical writing can explain where ideas such as channels and points come from, while a present-day assessment looks at what care suits you now. The two conversations can sit comfortably side by side.

Turning interest into a personal plan

When you move from history to your own health, try naming the symptom first and then, separately, the result you would like. Useful goals might include:

  • less discomfort during a specific activity;
  • a clearer understanding of what is going on;
  • knowing when it is time to see a GP or specialist for another assessment.

Christine can explain how progress will be looked at and which signs would lead her to rethink the approach.

A living link to an old library

There is something special about knowing that ideas discussed in a modern treatment room have roots in texts compiled some seventeen centuries ago. If you would simply like to chat about the classics, mention it when you book at the Lane Cove clinic.
