Moxa, Cupping and More: Does Combining Treatments Make Sense?

8:29 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

A session that combines moxa, cupping and other techniques can sound more thorough. Here is why each part needs its own clear reason.

More techniques is not automatically more complete

Write-ups that describe moxa, cups, scraping and other hands-on methods together can make a combined session sound like the thorough choice. Simply having many techniques on hand, however, does not mean any one person needs several in the same appointment.

Asking what each part adds

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, uses moxibustion and other traditional methods at the Freshwater clinic, where many of her clients come from Balgowlah, Manly and further up the peninsula. If a combination is proposed, ask her:

  • What does each element bring to the plan?
  • Why combine them rather than use one?
  • How will we tell whether each part is earning its place?

Practical matters count as well: how much time you have, what feels comfortable and how much skin recovery you are prepared to manage between visits.

A plan you can follow

A tidy plan lets you see why every piece is there. Adding procedures just because they exist is not a good enough reason. Fewer, well-explained steps are often easier to review and adjust.

Heat and comfort considerations

Where moxibustion is part of the mix, decide in advance how you will flag that the warmth is too much, and ask about care afterwards. Numbness, delicate skin and smoke sensitivity all matter, especially when another technique is used on nearby skin in the same visit. Directions should be written for you, not copied from the internet or from a friend's appointment.

If you have a health condition or take medicines that affect your skin or circulation, your GP may want to be kept in the loop.

Simple can be enough

Sometimes a single, well-chosen approach is the clearest path. Feel free to ask Christine at the Freshwater clinic whether a simpler session might suit you; it is a sensible question, not a sign of reluctance.
