Boosting Digestive Health with Traditional Chinese Medicine

12:30 pm 21 April 2025 Luis Guerrero 0 Comments

Your digestive system plays an important part in how you feel each day. When it is unsettled, people may notice bloating, reflux, constipation or IBS-type symptoms, and some explore acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as a complement to medical care.

How acupuncture is used for digestion

Digestive discomfort such as bloating, reflux, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms is very common. These symptoms can have many causes, so it is important to see your GP for assessment, particularly if they are new, persistent or accompanied by weight loss, bleeding or pain.

Alongside medical care, some people choose acupuncture. Researchers have studied acupuncture for digestive complaints such as nausea and IBS-type symptoms, and the evidence so far is mixed, with research ongoing. We therefore do not claim it regulates stomach acid or changes bowel function. People who use acupuncture for digestive wellbeing often hope to:

  • feel more relaxed, as stress and digestion are often closely linked
  • have a calm space to rest when their stomach feels unsettled
  • support their overall sense of comfort alongside dietary advice
  • take an active role in their own self-care

TCM and gut health

Traditional Chinese medicine views digestion as central to wellbeing. In TCM theory, the Spleen and Stomach systems transform food into Qi and nourishment, and when they are out of balance this is traditionally linked with tiredness, skin concerns and changes in mood. These are traditional concepts rather than medical diagnoses, but they explain why a TCM practitioner will ask about your energy, sleep and emotions as well as your digestion.

As well as acupuncture, a TCM approach may include Chinese herbal medicine, dietary suggestions based on traditional principles, such as favouring warm, cooked meals, and lifestyle habits like eating at regular times and slowing down at meals. If you take medication or have a diagnosed condition, check with your GP or a dietitian before making major changes, and tell your doctor about any herbs you use.

A holistic approach

For people living with ongoing digestive discomfort, acupuncture and TCM offer a natural, holistic approach that some include in their routine as a complement to medical care. Our practitioner, Dr Christine Shen (Acupuncturist), is happy to discuss whether it may suit you.
