Why Darker Cupping Marks Don't Mean Better Results

7:07 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

A dramatic cupping mark is not a measure of success. Here is what really matters when you review a cupping session in Freshwater.

Summer on the Northern Beaches brings plenty of bare shoulders, and every so often you will spot the round marks left by cupping. Photos online can make it look as though the deepest purple circle signals the most powerful session. That impression is misleading.

What actually shapes a mark

The colour left behind depends on the strength of the suction, how long the cups stay in place, your skin type and the way your body happens to respond. A vivid mark does not prove that more good has been done. Two people having an identical session can walk away with very different-looking backs.

Talk about purpose first

Before cupping begins, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, can explain why it is being suggested and how the intensity will be set. Afterwards, ask what you can expect over the next few days and which changes would be worth reporting. When comparing one session with another, think about comfort, how well you can move and the goal you started with, rather than chasing the darkest shade.

Choosing a yardstick that means something

Pick an ordinary task or symptom before your appointment, perhaps reaching up to a high shelf or turning to check a blind spot while driving, and bring it up at the follow-up. Add how your skin settled and how comfortable the session felt. A mark is a single observation. Whether to continue should depend on the reason you started, how you responded and what other options exist.

Cupping in Freshwater

The Freshwater clinic is an easy trip from Manly, Dee Why and Balgowlah if you would like to discuss whether cupping fits your goals. Mention any upcoming beach events, weddings or photos, since visible marks can take a while to fade and you may prefer to plan around them. Please read this as general information rather than personal advice.
