Why More Cupping Is Not Always Better for Your Skin

7:58 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Booking cupping more often or asking for stronger suction can feel like commitment, but skin needs time to settle. Here is how to plan sessions sensibly.

The myth of more is better

It can be tempting to think that booking cupping more often, or asking for stronger suction, shows commitment and speeds things along. In reality, excessive cupping can injure the skin, and going back over an area that has not healed can make recovery harder. Frequency and intensity are practical decisions, not a test of determination.

Planning sessions with Christine

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers cupping at the Lane Cove clinic. Before arranging a further session, talk with her about:

  • how much time to leave between appointments;
  • how your skin has recovered since the last one;
  • what you noticed in the days afterwards.

Signs that call for advice, not another round

New blisters, significant pain or generally feeling unwell after cupping should prompt you to seek advice rather than book again. Contact Christine, and your GP if needed, so the cause can be looked at properly. Decisions about the next step belong with a proper check of what happened, rather than a belief that doing the same thing again will hurry results along.

Keeping the review focused on you

Before treatment, choose an everyday task or symptom you would like to talk about at follow-up, perhaps turning your head while driving or sleeping through without a sore shoulder. After the session, include comfort and how the skin healed in your review. A visible mark tells only part of the story; whether to continue should come back to why you started, how you responded and what other options exist.

Giving your skin the time it needs

Patience can feel frustrating when you want relief, yet allowing the skin to settle is part of looking after yourself. Make a quick note of how the area looks and feels a day or two after each visit, and bring those notes to the Lane Cove clinic so the next decision rests on real observations rather than a hunch.
