You can begin psychotherapy without having everything worked out. Here is what a first session might cover and what to ask about goals and confidentiality.
A common reason people delay seeking psychological support is the feeling that they should first be able to explain everything neatly. That is not required. A first session is a starting place, not an exam, and it can begin with whatever feels most pressing.
You might talk about what has become harder lately, how long it has been going on and what you would like to be different. Sleep, relationships, work pressures and any help you have had before can all paint a picture. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, also holds qualifications in psychotherapy, and she can help you sort these threads into a workable starting point.
It is reasonable to ask how goals will be set, how you will both check whether things are on track and what confidentiality means day to day, including its limits. There is no standard number of sessions that fits every person. Likewise, hearing the name of a method does not tell you whether the working relationship will feel right; that becomes clearer through the conversations themselves.

Therapy should make space for what matters to you. You can say what you would like to understand better, what feels stuck and how you would know that something had shifted. Ask Christine how the work will be reviewed and what options exist if your needs change between appointments, including referral to other services when that would be more suitable.
For residents of the Northern Beaches, attending the Freshwater clinic avoids a long trip across the bridge for each session. If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, contact emergency services or a crisis line rather than waiting for a booked appointment. Otherwise, a simple enquiry is all it takes to arrange a first conversation, and this article remains general guidance only.
