Moxa Sticks, Cones and Indirect Methods: Know Which Is Planned

8:17 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Moxibustion covers sticks, cones and methods using ginger or salt between moxa and skin. Here is why it matters to know which one is planned for you.

One word, several techniques

Moxibustion is a single word covering quite different applications. Articles may mention moxa sticks held above the skin, small cones, warming needles, or a slice of ginger or a layer of salt placed beneath the moxa. Each is its own technique, and none of them is a do-it-yourself project.

Asking exactly what is proposed

Moxa is one of the traditional techniques used by Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, at the Freshwater clinic, a short drive for people in Manly, Balgowlah and nearby Northern Beaches suburbs. Before a session, ask:

  • Which technique are you considering for me?
  • Will the moxa stay off the skin the whole time?
  • What precautions apply to this method?
  • What sensations mean I should speak up immediately?

Recognising the word is not the same as knowing what will happen. A thorough chat covers warmth, smoke, whether anything touches your skin and your personal health background.

Before the heat goes on

Settle on a clear signal for when warmth becomes uncomfortable, and find out what aftercare you will need. Mention reduced sensation, skin concerns and any sensitivity to smoke. Those arrangements belong to you alone; a video tutorial or a relative's experience cannot set your treatment needs. If you have a lung condition, heart condition or diabetes, it may also help to let your GP know you are considering moxa.

Why home experiments are risky

Because moxa involves burning material close to the body, trying an unfamiliar method without guidance can lead to burns or breathing irritation. If you are curious about a technique you have read about, ask Christine to explain it rather than testing it on yourself.

Clear names, clear choices

Once you know which method is planned and why, you can make a genuinely informed decision. Feel free to ask for the name of the technique to be written down at the end of your visit to the Freshwater clinic so you can look back on it later.
