Acupuncture for Stress & Anxiety: A Natural Solution

12:26 pm 4 April 2025 Luis 0 Comments

In today's fast-paced world, stress and anxiety are common, and ongoing stress can show up as headaches, tiredness or digestive upsets. Some people use acupuncture as a gentle way to rest, unwind and support their sense of calm.

How acupuncture is used for stress

When we are stressed, the body tends to shift into a heightened "fight-or-flight" state, driven by the sympathetic nervous system. Its counterpart is the "rest-and-digest" state of the parasympathetic nervous system. Researchers are studying whether acupuncture influences this balance and stress-related chemistry such as cortisol, serotonin and dopamine. The evidence is still developing and results are mixed, so we do not claim acupuncture changes these processes.

In TCM theory, stress is traditionally described as Qi becoming constrained, particularly in relation to the Liver system, and points are chosen to encourage a smoother flow. These are traditional ideas rather than medical facts. What many people notice in practice is simpler: a session offers quiet time to lie still and breathe, and some say they feel more relaxed afterwards.

Acupuncture and anxiety

Anxiety can show up as racing thoughts, tightness in the chest and trouble sleeping. People who use acupuncture as part of their self-care often hope to:

  • have a regular pause from a busy, overactive mind
  • feel more physically at ease during and after sessions
  • create a calmer routine that supports rest and sleep
  • feel better able to cope with everyday pressures

Experiences vary, and acupuncture is not a replacement for psychological or medical care. If anxiety, low mood, chest tightness or sleep problems are affecting you, please see your GP, who can check your health and discuss options such as counselling or other support.

Ongoing support

Some people enjoy a sense of calm during a single session, while others prefer regular appointments as one part of a broader plan for managing stress, alongside sleep, movement, time outdoors and connection with others.

A gentle option to consider

If stress and anxiety are affecting your daily life, acupuncture is one gentle, natural option some people include in their routine, together with the care of their GP. Our practitioner, Dr Christine Shen (Acupuncturist), is happy to talk through whether it may suit you.
