Mental Health Care That Sees More Than a Diagnosis

8:16 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

A diagnosis can open doors to support, but it never describes a whole life. Here is how to keep your own priorities at the centre of psychological care.

A label is only one part of the picture

A diagnosis can be genuinely useful. It can open doors to support and help professionals communicate. Yet it never captures everything about a person: their relationships, work, interests, culture and hopes. Support works well when it links with what someone actually wants to regain, protect or keep doing.

Talking about what matters most

In Lane Cove, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, draws on her psychotherapy qualifications to support people through difficult periods. In your sessions you might tell her:

  • which parts of life feel most affected right now;
  • what you value and would like to protect;
  • what an ordinary good day looks like for you.

Those details help shape a plan that reflects both difficulties and strengths.

Coordination and review

Ask how the therapy will be checked along the way, and when teaming up with other care, such as your GP, a psychiatrist or a community service, could be worthwhile. Coordination can mean everyone involved understands your goals, with your consent guiding what is shared.

You are more than a symptom list

Forms and questionnaires have their place, but they cannot describe a life. A good approach makes room for your own account, including the things that are going well, alongside the challenges.

A direction shaped by you

Spend some time naming the questions you want answered, the habits that seem hardest to budge and the signs you would count as progress. It is also fine to ask what back-up exists if life throws something new at you between sessions.

Bringing your full self

Consider jotting down three things that give your life meaning, even small ones like a morning walk or a favourite meal. Sharing that list at the Lane Cove clinic can help the conversation start with who you are, not only with what is hard.
