Gua Sha Skin Colour: Why It Needs Clinical Context

7:18 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

The colour after gua sha draws attention, but it is not a diagnosis. Here is what to mention first and how your skin response should be monitored.

Photos of gua sha often come with captions claiming the colour reveals something about the person's health. It is an appealing idea, but a picture of skin cannot do the job of a proper assessment.

Interpretation is not diagnosis

Traditional readings of skin colour after scraping belong to a particular framework of ideas. They should be kept separate from a medical diagnosis, which relies on clinical examination and, where needed, tests arranged by a doctor. Treat any interpretation you see online with appropriate caution.

Skin concerns to mention first

Before gua sha is considered, tell Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, about any bruising you cannot explain, skin that tears or marks easily, or a rash that has appeared recently. Some of these may need your GP's attention before any scraping is discussed. You can also ask how pressure will be chosen and how your skin's reaction will be watched during and after the session.

The real goal

The purpose is to reach a suitable decision about care, not to produce a shade of red that matches an image. If a lighter approach, or no gua sha at all, makes more sense for you, that is a perfectly good outcome of the conversation.

Using recovery as your guide

At any follow-up, describe tenderness that lasted, irritation or bruising that seemed out of the ordinary. Tools and techniques ought to be chosen for your skin and situation, not for a dramatic result. Christine can then talk through going ahead, changing the method or exploring another option.

Gua sha at Lane Cove

Rainbow Medicine offers gua sha at the Lane Cove clinic, a short trip for people from Chatswood, Longueville and the surrounding area. Mention any blood-thinning medicines when you arrive. Your own skin and health deserve an in-person discussion, since a blog post can only speak in broad terms.
