Reaching Out for Psychological Support Without Feeling Ashamed

8:05 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Many people wait until things feel unbearable because therapy seems like admitting defeat. Here is a gentler way to think about taking the first step.

Waiting until things feel unbearable

Plenty of people hold off seeking therapy because they believe it means admitting they cannot manage. Others worry about what friends, family or colleagues will think. Attitudes differ between communities and generations, but the personal question is often the same: what would make support feel easier to approach?

You do not have to prove you are struggling enough

Alongside her acupuncture work, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is qualified in psychotherapy and sees clients at the Freshwater clinic from Manly, Balgowlah and around the Northern Beaches. You can begin by describing a single concern and asking how psychotherapy might be relevant. There is no threshold of distress you need to reach first, and no need to justify why you want to talk.

Practical details that reduce uncertainty

Sometimes the unknowns are what keep people away. It is completely reasonable to ask about:

  • how privacy and confidentiality are handled;
  • fees and payment arrangements;
  • what happens in a first session and how long it runs.

Having those answers can make the decision clearer, while how much you share, and when, stays up to you.

Agreeing on where to head

Therapy should make space for your own priorities. You might talk about what you want to understand better, what feels stuck and how you will notice movement. Feel free to ask how often the direction will be revisited and who else could step in if your situation shifts between appointments. If a GP or another service could add to your care, that can be discussed as well.

Taking the first step gently

Asking for help is a practical choice, much like seeing a physio for a sore knee. If even phoning feels like a lot, you might start by writing one sentence about what has been on your mind and bringing it to a first conversation in Freshwater.
