Herbs and Immunity Headlines: Reading the Research Wisely

7:11 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Winter headlines about herbs and immunity are everywhere. Learn what that research can and cannot say, and how to connect it to your own granule product.

Every winter, as coughs and colds make their way around Northern Beaches schools and offices, headlines appear suggesting that one herb or another acts on the immune system. It is natural to wonder whether you should be taking it.

What the research behind a headline may be

Look closely and many of these stories describe experiments in a laboratory dish, studies in animals or one extract tested at one strength. Findings like those can be interesting, but they cannot tell an individual what to take, how much, or whether it would keep them from getting sick. A result about a single herb also says little about a combined formula supplied in a different form.

How this relates to granules

Herbal medicine prescribed by Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is dispensed as concentrated granules in labelled bottles. If a headline has caught your attention, bring the exact details from your own bottle and ask how the research being quoted connects, or does not connect, to that preparation. When you sit down with Christine, the discussion will centre on your health history, the medicines you already use and the reason you are seeking care, not on a catchy phrase about immunity.

Organising your herbal plan

If granules are prescribed, make sure you know the product name, the written directions for measuring and storing it, and when it will be reviewed. Keep that sheet tucked beside the original bottle so the two never become separated. Tell Christine whenever another medicine is added or stopped, and if a new symptom crops up and you cannot tell whether it is connected, call for guidance rather than adjusting the amount yourself.

Illustrative: two plain white granule bottles side by side on a wooden table, a red blind and stone wall softly blurred behind them.

Talking it through in Freshwater

The Freshwater clinic is close for families in Harbord, Manly and Balgowlah who would like to discuss herbal medicine in a measured way. Feel free to print the article that sparked your curiosity and bring it along; reading it together is often a good way to sort what applies to you from what does not. For any acute illness, your GP remains the first port of call. This post is general reading rather than individual advice.
