The directions with your herbal granules are written for that product alone. Learn why general articles and old cooking terms cannot replace them.
Directions for a herbal product can look like routine fine print. In fact, every bottled granule preparation comes with instructions written for that product and that prescription, and skimming them because the routine feels familiar can lead to a dose that is not what was intended.
Measuring amounts, what to mix the granules with and how to store the bottle can differ from one formula to the next. No blog post can list the correct steps for every preparation. Older Chinese herbal texts also use cooking terms written for loose herbs, such as adding some ingredients early or late; those terms belong to a different form of medicine, and they should never be swapped in for the directions that come with your granules.
Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, dispenses herbal granules in containers at the Lane Cove clinic. Each product comes with written preparation, measuring, storage and use-by directions she can explain step by step. Ask her to go through them with you, especially when a product is new to you, and keep the sheet with the original label.
It is tempting to rely on the routine from a previous bottle because it is quicker to recall. Each product can have its own requirements, so instructions from one should not be carried over to another. If you take other medicines, keep your GP and pharmacist informed about the granules too.
Something on the label not matching the sheet, or a step you are unsure about? Set the bottle aside and contact the clinic rather than guessing. A quick question is far easier than wondering afterwards whether a dose was right.

After the first week, most people find the directions become second nature. Until then, try underlining the one or two steps that differ from your previous product, keep the sheet in the same drawer as the bottle, and bring both when you next see Christine in Lane Cove.
