Making Your Cupping Decision With Realistic Expectations

8:30 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Photos of dark cupping marks can shape expectations before a first visit. Here is how to set sensible goals and judge a session by more than skin colour.

Judging cupping by photographs

Cupping leaves visible marks, which makes it tempting to think you can judge it from a picture. In practice, how marks look depends on many factors, including skin type, suction strength and the area involved. Aiming for darker circles is not a helpful goal, and images on social media can colour expectations long before anyone walks through the door.

Deciding together before a session

For anyone considering cupping, a first step with Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, is to agree on:

  • the reason cupping is on the table for you;
  • what a sensible goal looks like;
  • what follow-up will be needed, and when you will talk again.

If you have a health condition, take blood-thinning medicine or have fragile skin, raise it early, and involve your GP if Christine suggests it.

After the session

When looking back on how things went, pay attention to comfort and how you are managing day to day, rather than reading the marks as a score. A faint mark does not mean failure, and a dark one does not mean success.

Keeping the review meaningful

Pick a movement or task before treatment that you can compare later, such as reaching to a high shelf or sitting at a desk all afternoon. Fold in how comfortable you were and how your skin settled. The decision to book again should flow from your aim, your experience and the other choices open to you, not from a photo.

The person at the centre

A wise decision about cupping starts and finishes with you. Before booking, consider writing down in one sentence what you would like from treatment, and hand that note to Christine at the start of your Lane Cove appointment, so it can guide the conversation from the first minute. Having your own words in front of you makes it easier to stay focused on what you came for, even if the session raises new questions.
