Your First Acupuncture Visit: Before, During and After

8:01 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Thinking of a first acupuncture appointment in three stages can make it far less daunting. Here is what to prepare, mention and check at each step.

Breaking the visit into three parts

Trying acupuncture for the first time can feel like stepping into the unknown. Thinking of the appointment as three stages often makes it more approachable. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, sees people at the Freshwater clinic, handy for Balgowlah, Manly and nearby Northern Beaches suburbs, and welcomes questions at every stage.

Illustrative, Freshwater: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, touches a fine needle in the forearm of a patient in a light blue jumper.

Before you arrive

  • Write down the medicines, supplements and herbs you take.
  • Note relevant health details, such as pregnancy, a bleeding disorder, a pacemaker or recent surgery.
  • Think about what you would like help with.
  • Eat something light and wear clothing that is easy to adjust.

During the session

Tell Christine what you feel as it happens. A dull ache, tingling or warmth may be expected, but if a sensation is sharp or worrying, say so straight away. You can also ask her to pause and explain what she is doing at any point.

After treatment

Before you leave, check that you understand any advice for the rest of the day and know how to report a concern. If you feel lightheaded, take a few minutes before driving home.

Practical details to confirm directly

Fees, availability and booking arrangements should be confirmed with Christine herself. If you have been reading about acupuncture clinics overseas, remember that course lengths and booking rules elsewhere may not apply here.

Defining your own goal

It helps to separate the symptom from the outcome you are hoping for. That outcome might be less discomfort while walking the dog along the beach, a clearer picture of the problem, or knowing when to see a GP or specialist. Ask Christine how you will both judge whether acupuncture is worth continuing, and what might make her suggest another route.

Arriving prepared and relaxed

Pop your list of medicines and questions in your bag the night before, allow a few spare minutes for parking in Freshwater, and you will be ready to focus on the conversation rather than the clock.
