Booking a Sound Session Without Getting Swept Up in the Hype

7:55 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Sound baths are everywhere on the Northern Beaches right now. Here is how to work out what you are really looking for before you book one.

Popular is not the same as proven

Sound baths and gong sessions have become a familiar sight on the Northern Beaches, popping up in yoga studios, community halls and social feeds. When something is everywhere, it is easy to feel you are missing out. Popularity tells us plenty about public interest, but it says nothing about what a session can do for a particular health concern.

Working out what you are really looking for

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers sound sessions as a relaxation experience at the Freshwater clinic, convenient for people in Balgowlah and Manly. Before booking, think about which of these is closest to your goal:

  • a restful hour to unwind and listen;
  • psychological support for something weighing on you;
  • help understanding a symptom that has been around for a while.

Each goal leads to a different conversation. A sound session suits the first. Christine also holds qualifications in psychotherapy and can talk about that option separately, while ongoing physical symptoms deserve assessment, often with your GP.

Judging value sensibly

Ask what the session includes, how long it runs and what you will be doing. Keep expectations in proportion. A high price, a novel instrument or striking advertising is not a reliable measure of what you will get from the experience.

Shaping the session around your comfort

Comfort can mean adjusting the volume, sitting further from the instruments, choosing a chair instead of a mat, or knowing you can pause at any time. There is no correct way to feel and no pressure to lie motionless. Let Christine know what feels manageable, and keep in mind the difference between enjoying a relaxing experience and receiving care for a medical condition.

Trying it on your own terms

If curiosity is what draws you in, that is a perfectly good reason to book. Arrive with an open mind, notice what you like and what you do not, and share that feedback afterwards. A session in Freshwater can simply be an hour of calm listening, with nothing more expected of it.
