Five Element acupuncture organises health through wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Here is how to understand it as a traditional framework.
If you have read about acupuncture for a while, you have probably met the Five Elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The terms are poetic, and for many people they offer an appealing way of thinking about the connections between body, mood and environment.
Five Element acupuncture uses these categories to arrange observations into a traditional picture of health. It is important to understand that this is an explanatory system from a long tradition. It should not be confused with blood tests, imaging or a medical diagnosis, and it does not replace those when they are needed.
If the framework interests you, ask Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, how it would influence her assessment and the choices she makes during treatment. Even within this tradition, the practical conversation still has to cover your symptoms, your goals and how you respond over a number of visits.

A broad description becomes valuable when it leads to a plan you can follow and understand. It is less helpful if it creates an expectation that every concern traces back to a single element. Most people's lives and health are more complicated than one category can capture.

Distinguish the thing bothering you from the change you are hoping for. Feeling more comfortable during a favourite activity, such as a weekend paddle at Freshwater, getting a firmer grasp of what is going on or knowing at what stage your GP should be involved are all reasonable aims. Ask Christine how the plan will be monitored and what would lead to a different approach.
Christine offers acupuncture at the Freshwater clinic for people living across the Northern Beaches. If traditional theory fascinates you, feel free to ask about it during your consultation. Keep in mind that this article describes a tradition in general terms and is not personal advice.
