Sound Practitioner Profiles and What They Can't Tell You

7:37 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

A training story can be inspiring, but it does not tell you how your own sound session will go. Here is what to ask instead.

Profiles of sound practitioners often read like travel adventures: years spent learning from teachers in distant monasteries, retreats in the mountains, rare instruments collected along the way. They can be fascinating to read on a quiet Sunday morning.

Illustrative, Freshwater: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, strikes a large gong with a soft mallet beside a seated client in a green jumper.

Inspiration is not evidence

A teacher's story may give you a feel for their philosophy and style. What it cannot do is establish clinical results. For someone living on the Northern Beaches and deciding whether to book, the practical issue is much simpler: what will my session involve, and will it suit me?

Questions about your session

Sessions with Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, are intended purely as restful time for your general wellbeing. Before booking, you might ask her:

  • Which instruments will be used?
  • What kind of experience is the session designed to offer?
  • How can the format be changed to suit me?

You set the limits

You are not obliged to put up with loud volume or an awkward posture because it featured in someone else's workshop or video. If lying flat bothers your back, a reclining chair might work better. If certain tones feel jarring, they can be left out. Being comfortable and knowing what to expect turns the session into a choice you have made thoughtfully.

Keeping it adjustable

Volume, your distance from the instruments, seating and the option to pause can all be altered as you go. There is no emotional response you are meant to have, and staying motionless is not a requirement. Let Christine know what feels manageable. A pleasant session of rest is a wellbeing activity and not a form of medical care, so health concerns should go to your GP.

Sound sessions in Freshwater

The Freshwater clinic offers a calm setting a few minutes from the beach for people from Curl Curl, Manly and surrounding suburbs. Wear something comfortable and allow a little time afterwards before driving. The ideas here are offered as general reading only.
