Tai Chi Exercise
Strip away the language and tai chi is a sequence of slow movements in which your weight keeps moving from one foot to the other while you stay upright. That is the mechanism. The reason it keeps turning up in research has nothing to do with energy and everything to do with the fact that standing on one leg, slowly, over and over, is good training for not falling over.
Falls prevention in older adults is where the research is most consistent, and it is consistent enough that tai chi appears in mainstream falls-prevention guidance rather than only in complementary medicine. Programs that show results tend to run twice a week for a few months, which is a real commitment rather than a drop-in.
There is weaker supporting work on knee osteoarthritis pain and on general wellbeing. Beyond that, the claims get ahead of the evidence, and you will see plenty of them.
You stand, you follow, you get some of it wrong, and nobody minds. No floor work, no particular clothing, no flexibility required to start. Most people find the first few weeks mentally tiring rather than physically hard, because remembering the sequence is the difficult part.
If standing for thirty minutes is not realistic, seated versions exist and are not a lesser option.
If you have had a fall in the last year, if you get dizzy when you stand, or if you have a heart or joint condition that limits what you have been told to do, check with your GP first. Not because this is risky, but because the right class for you might be the seated one or a supervised program rather than a general group.
This is exercise, not treatment. It does not replace anything you have been prescribed, and we would not suggest it instead of something your doctor has asked you to do.
If you already come here, it is worth a conversation about whether movement is the piece that is missing. Sometimes it is, and sometimes the honest answer is that strength work would do more.
