How can I be sure? It is best not to self-diagnose the symptoms, so consult your physician if you have IBS and not something more serious. Your Chinese doctor may be able to help you diagnose symptoms from a more oriental point of view. Rainbow acupuncture and medical herbs can adjust your diet to eliminate irritant triggers for your particular constitution.
Some medicines for IBS include acupuncture to improve abdominal flow and alleviate stress. Herbs increase in fibre (gradually, or it may aggravate symptoms)—massage stomach (9x clockwise, 9x counterclockwise). Probiotics increase the good bacteria in the intestine. Peppermint, magnesium and camomile can ease and relieve symptoms.
Dairy products: Lactose intolerance can cause gastrointestinal problems. When in doubt, try to eliminate dairies such as milk, yogurt and cheese.
Eat quickly, angry or hastily: When you eat or drink quickly, you can inhale too much air and overeat. Eat it slowly, consciously.
Other triggers: Sensitivities may include chocolate, soft drinks, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, and oily or processed foods. Hormone changes may also factor in the increase in symptoms of IBS.
One of the most common diagnoses of IBS in Traditional Chinese Medicine is what is known as a "liver-spleen disharmony" due to stress. Usually, the liver is in charge of the free flow of energy (or vital force), blood and oxygen to the spleen and stomach. The organs digest food by carrying and processing food and bringing down energy. The sensitivity increases when the energy of the liver becomes stagnant because of emotions such as stress, frustration, anger, mood and narrowness within the body. The liver is sensitive to these feelings, which hinders proper digestion. At the same time can lead to acid, eruptions, nausea, abdominal distension and bloating. Irregular stools may manifest diarrhea or constipation. Other common symptoms of stagnant liver energy include PMS, cramps with clots and irregular menstruation. Relieving stress would be the most critical aspect of the treatment scheme to get to the root of the problem.
Another frequent cause of IBS is nutritional sensitivity. It has been shown that the elimination of trigger foods helps tremendously with symptoms. Here are some items that should be removed:
Too many cold and raw vegetables: By eating too many cold vegetables, raw vegetables reduce digestive heat and result in malabsorption. Grill the vegetables instead and eat them hot.
Veggies and cruciferous legumes are healthy but can cause gas and bloating in susceptible individuals.
